The youth from Hambantota, who was found yesterday after
disappearing from police custody, has been remanded till September 21. G.G.
Gayashan, 22, was found at a temple in Dickwella and surrendered to police
headquarters with the help of the chief incumbent at the temple. He was
produced before Hambantota District Judge Manjula Karunaratne at around 2.30am
today (16) and ordered remanded till Sep. 21. The youth in question had
initially been arrested by police on September 5, along with two others, over
their alleged connection with the theft of 80 sacks of paddy from a storage
facility in Bandagiriya. However, he had disappeared while in
custody on September 8 and had been missing since yesterday. Four police
officers - three Sergeants and one Constable- attached to the Hambantota Police
Station were suspended today over the incident. Several police officers
attached to the Hambantota police station were also transferred over the same
incident.
